Help now so everyone can continue to enjoy swimming at the Forest...
|
The Bessey Swimming Pool is located near the entrance to the Nebraska National Forest at Halsey, Nebraska. The pool was built in 1935 by the Civil Conservation Corp and is the only known surviving CCC era Forest Service swimming pool in the nation.
Currently, due to failing structure and old plumbing, the existing pool's life is reaching its limit and is in desperate need of renovation in order to continue to serve visitors to the Forest and the neighboring communities.
The Nebraska National Forest Friends group is leading a community initiative to maintain a swimming pool at the Forest. The group found through community surveys that the majority of those responding favored replacement of the existing facility rather than renovation. The group is now conducting fundraising efforts to establish funds to move swimming pool project at the forest forward.
All donations are accepted. The public is invited to participate in the fundraiser and anyone interested in seeing a swimming pool continue to be an available attraction at the forest in the future is encouraged to help. Contact the Sandhills RC&D Office at (308) 546-0636 for more information.
Halsey Pool Statistics:
In the summer of 2004, 2191 swimmers used the pool over a total of 49 days. Daily fees were $2 for adults and $1 for children. However, operations and maintenance costs for 2004 totaled $26,049 - a cost of $11.89 per swimmer. This deficit was due to a serious deterioration of the mechanical and plumbing systems which has led to severe water leakage in and around the pool. Some repairs were made in 2006 to help control the water leakage.
The 70+ year old pool will continue to deteriorate causing higher operation costs until at some point, it will not be feasible to continue pool operations.
